Applied Learning Programme

The Applied Learning Programme (ALP) in Ang Mo Kio Secondary School (AMKSS) aims to create opportunities for students to apply what they have learned in class in areas of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) through hands-on and minds-on activities. Through this, students will be equipped with 21st Century Competencies that will developed them into innovative and individuals ready for the future workforce.

AMKSS was one of the pioneering schools that implemented ALP with its focus on Environmental Sustainability through STEM. Since its conception in 2014, the programme has created interest and awareness in areas related to STEM in our students through our partnership with Siloso Beach Resort and NParks. Students were given opportunities to apply the knowledge that they have acquired about Environmental Sustainability when they assisted in Siloso Beach Resort’s Environmental Education efforts for the tourists through the Snap2Tell mobile application.  More recently, our students contributed to NParks’ biodiversity surveys to monitor animal populations in our parks.

Our Secondary 1 students will undergo an enhanced ALP Curriculum that will equip them with knowledge relevant to the challenges faced in a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, Ambiguous) world. Our revised ALP Curriculum, comprises three major themes, namely Biodiversity, Energy and Resources, and Electronics & Coding.

Students can look forward to collaborations with our growing list of partners and work experiences with various industries. Prospective students can look forward to highlights such as exciting learning journeys to survey the unique biodiversity in Singapore, conduct intriguing experiments on energy generation and water use in Singapore, and code microcontrollers that interact with the environment.

Secondary 2 students learning to code their own devices during ALP lessons using micro:bit.
Our students participated in the Maker Faire 2018, where they presented their projects made using micro:bits.
Students participated in the Tank Tinkerer Competition at Suntec City Convention Centre, where two of our teams clinched 1st and 2nd.
