For AMKSS, For Team, For Self - We serve
“Ang Mo Kio! Ace! Ace! So!!!”, That’s the battle cry that will ring out whenever our badminton players are about to step on court to do battle in the recent NSG badminton competition. Cheering before a match has been a tradition of the badminton team all these years and this year was no different. It has not only helped enhance team spirit and unity but also give our players a psychological edge during the match.
Team AMKSS trains thrice a week in order to help the students build badminton skills and to train their grit and resilience in getting things right. Our senior school teams have consistently achieved Top 4 placing in the very competitive South Zone Badminton Competitions over the years. One of our alumni, Mr Kelvin Ho, is the national singles coach for players including Loh Kean Yew and Yeo Jia Min and will guide them to glory when they do battle in the upcoming Olympic games in Paris this year.
In 2022, our B Division Girls continued our tradition of making our presence felt in this highly competitive arena by coming in second place. This year, even though none of the teams made it to Top 4 for zonals, at the time of writing, at least one our teams has made it to Top 8 –our B division boys. Our team hopes to take the lessons learnt from this season’s competition back to the drawing board and do better in next year’s edition.
Besides pushing boundaries in the sports arena, Team AMKSS also seeks developmental opportunities that enable our student leaders and members to learn and grow through the planning and execution of bonding sessions and friendly matches.
In February this year, our Secondary 2 badminton leaders organized a Sec 1 Welcome Ceremony to induct their juniors into the CCA. Besides introducing them to the captains, coaches and teachers-in-charge, ice breakers and bonding games like Pictionary were played. Goodie bags and prizes were given out to all participants and winners of the bonding games respectively. It was a fun filled afternoon and from the smiles on the faces of the Sec 1s, one could clearly tell they enjoyed the session a lot.
In April, after the C Div games, a very special and esteemed alumnus, National Singles Head Coach Kelvin Ho visited AMKSS to give the badminton players a motivational speech. He shared his experiences and was very inspirational. Thank you for being a good role model for our players!
Also in May this year, our Secondary 3 badminton leaders went on a recce hike of the Southern Ridges in preparation for the June Bonding Camp. It was a meaningful and enriching time for the players as they got a chance to explore a beautiful nature trail with breathtaking views of the Singapore’s Southern Waterfront. Through the recce, they also learnt how to do Risk Assessment Management and familiarize themselves with the route of the hike.
As we look ahead to 2025, our hope is for the Badminton club to continue to grow in strength and unity.
